Sakkarai Pongal Recipe (Temple Style Sweet Pongal)

Description: A classic kovil prasadam made from rice, moong dal, jaggery, and ghee. Sweet, aromatic, and served during Pongal and temple offerings.

Ingredients

  • Raw rice — 1 cup
  • Moong dal — ¼ cup
  • Jaggery — 1 cup
  • Ghee — 4 tbsp
  • Cashews — 10–12
  • Raisins — 12–15
  • Cardamom powder — ½ tsp
  • Pinch of salt

Steps

  1. Rinse rice and moong dal together 2–3 times.
  2. Add 3 cups water and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  3. Melt jaggery with ½ cup water, strain impurities.
  4. Mix jaggery syrup with cooked rice–dal mixture. Stir on low flame for 5 mins.
  5. Roast cashews and raisins in ghee, add to pongal.
  6. Finish with cardamom powder. Serve warm.
